27 March 2026What Is Lumbar Spinal Stenosis?
Lumbar spinal stenosis is a condition in which the spinal canal narrows, leading to compression of the spinal cord and nerve roots. This narrowing creates pressure on the nerves, causing pain, numbness, and muscle weakness. It commonly develops as a result of age-related degenerative changes.
The main causes of lumbar spinal stenosis include osteoarthritis of the spine, herniated discs, thickening of ligaments, and congenitally narrow spinal canals. During the aging process, bones and ligaments in the spine may wear down and thicken, leading to narrowing of the spinal canal. Additionally, spinal injuries and tumors can also contribute to this condition.
Symptoms of lumbar spinal stenosis include lower back pain, leg pain, numbness or tingling, muscle weakness, and difficulty walking. These symptoms often worsen while standing or walking and improve when sitting or bending forward. In advanced cases, serious neurological symptoms such as loss of bladder or bowel control may occur.
Diagnosis of lumbar spinal stenosis is made through physical examination, medical history, and imaging methods such as MRI, CT scans, or X-rays. These methods are used to evaluate the degree of spinal canal narrowing and the extent of nerve involvement.
Treatment options vary depending on the severity of the condition and the patient’s symptoms. In mild cases, conservative treatments such as rest, physical therapy, pain relievers, and anti-inflammatory medications may be sufficient. Physical therapy aims to strengthen the muscles supporting the spine and improve mobility. Epidural steroid injections may also be used to reduce pain and inflammation.
In moderate to severe cases, surgical intervention may be required. Surgical options include laminectomy (widening of the spinal canal) and spinal fusion (stabilization of the vertebrae). The goal of surgery is to relieve pressure on the nerves and reduce symptoms.
With early diagnosis and appropriate treatment, the symptoms of lumbar spinal stenosis can be controlled and patients’ quality of life can be improved. Therefore, it is important to consult a specialist when lower back pain or related symptoms are noticed.
