Prof. Dr. Sinan KAHRAMAN and her expert team safely perform treatments and achieve successful results.

Lumbar Spinal Stenosis

Lumbar spinal stenosis is defined as the narrowing of the spinal canal in the lower back to less than 100 mm². Patients often feel the need to sit down after walking a certain distance. Symptoms may include numbness, tingling, and weakness in the legs.

How Is Lumbar Spinal Stenosis Surgery Performed?

Depending on factors such as the level of stenosis, insufficient lumbar curvature, and instability between the vertebrae, the procedure may be performed using minimally invasive techniques (microscopic or endoscopic) or as an open surgery with instrumentation (requiring spinal stabilization with screws).

Postoperative Process After Lumbar Spinal Stenosis Surgery

Depending on the type of surgery, the hospital stay ranges from 2 days (for minimally invasive procedures) to about one week (for open, instrumented surgeries). In both types, patients are mobilized and start walking the next day. Patients can return to sports after one month following minimally invasive surgery, and after 3–6 months following open surgery.

I am grateful to Prof. Sinan for everything and sincerely thank him for his kindness and attentive care. On July 15, 2016, my left leg was severely fractured in a traffic accident. There was a high risk of my leg becoming shorter, impaired, or leaving me with a limp. After three surgeries performed by Prof. Sinan, I was able to return to my place in the squad in amateur football matches.

I met Mr. Sinan because of my daughter’s scoliosis surgery. We are very lucky that he came into our lives during such a difficult time. His experience in his profession and his sincere care and attention to his patient left us in admiration. I saw in Dr. Sinan what it means to truly love one’s profession. After a 14-hour surgery, my daughter regained her health thanks to Dr. Sinan and his team. I don’t even know how to thank him. I wish Dr. Sinan success in his profession and happiness in his life.

Dr. Sinan, endless thanks for everything—we are truly grateful. Thanks to the surgery you performed, my mother’s shoulder pain, which had been keeping her awake especially at night for a year, has come to an end. You diagnosed the causes of her shoulder pain as frozen shoulder, degeneration, narrowing, and a tear, and you successfully treated all of them with a single operation. No matter how much we thank you, it is not enough—we are deeply grateful. We are so glad to have you. May God grant you strength and good health and never let you be absent from our lives. Wishing you continued success, Dr. Sinan.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Spinal Stenosis?
Lumbar spinal stenosis, medically known as spinal canal narrowing, is a condition in which the spinal canal narrows, compressing the spinal cord and nerve roots. This narrowing can put pressure on the nerves, causing pain, numbness, and muscle weakness. It usually develops as a result of degenerative changes that occur with aging. The main causes of spinal stenosis include osteoarthritis, disc herniation, thickening of connective tissues, and congenitally narrow spinal canals. During aging, the bones and connective tissues in the spine wear down and thicken, leading to narrowing of the spinal canal. Spinal injuries and tumors can also cause spinal stenosis.
What are the symptoms of spinal stenosis?
Symptoms of spinal stenosis include lower back pain, leg pain, numbness or tingling, muscle weakness, and difficulty walking. These symptoms often worsen when standing or walking and are relieved by sitting or bending forward. In advanced cases, serious neurological symptoms such as loss of control over urinary and bowel function may also occur.
Treatment Options
Treatment options vary depending on the severity of the stenosis and the patient's symptoms. In mild cases, conservative treatment methods may include rest, physical therapy, pain relievers, and anti-inflammatory drugs. Physical therapy aims to strengthen the muscles supporting the spine and improve mobility. Epidural steroid injections may also be used to reduce pain and inflammation.
