Lumbar Spinal Stenosis
Lumbar spinal stenosis is defined as the narrowing of the spinal canal in the lower back to less than 100 mm². Patients often feel the need to sit down after walking a certain distance. Symptoms may include numbness, tingling, and weakness in the legs.
How Is Lumbar Spinal Stenosis Surgery Performed?
Depending on factors such as the level of stenosis, insufficient lumbar curvature, and instability between the vertebrae, the procedure may be performed using minimally invasive techniques (microscopic or endoscopic) or as an open surgery with instrumentation (requiring spinal stabilization with screws).
Postoperative Process After Lumbar Spinal Stenosis Surgery
Depending on the type of surgery, the hospital stay ranges from 2 days (for minimally invasive procedures) to about one week (for open, instrumented surgeries). In both types, patients are mobilized and start walking the next day. Patients can return to sports after one month following minimally invasive surgery, and after 3–6 months following open surgery.
