Kyphosis Surgery

Prof. Dr. Sinan KAHRAMAN and her expert team safely perform treatments and achieve successful results.

Kyphosis Treatment

Kyphosis surgery can be examined in two main groups: adults and children. In children, kyphosis observed during adolescence is generally treated surgically if the curvature exceeds 75–80°, if there is chronic back and lower back pain, and if it does not respond to physical therapy.

In adults, surgical treatment is applied if spinal balance is disrupted and chronic back and lower back pain occurs.

How Is Kyphosis Surgery Performed?

Similar to scoliosis surgery, screws are placed at specific levels of the spine. Using the force applied through these screws, metal rods are shaped to correct the curvature.

What Are the Advantages of Kyphosis Surgery?

The shape of the spine is corrected. Chronic back and lower back pain is relieved. It also prevents the progression of the hunchback deformity and eliminates the need for more extensive surgery in the future.

Postoperative Process After Kyphosis Surgery

After kyphosis surgery, the patient is mobilized the next day and monitored in the hospital for about one week. Stitches are removed after 15 days. The patient can return to daily life after three weeks and resume sports activities after three months.

He graduated from Istanbul University-Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine. Between 2004 and 2010, he completed his residency training in the Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology at Bezmialem Vakıf University Faculty of Medicine, becoming a specialist in Orthopedics and Traumatology.

I am grateful to Prof. Sinan for everything and sincerely thank him for his kindness and attentive care. On July 15, 2016, my left leg was severely fractured in a traffic accident. There was a high risk of my leg becoming shorter, impaired, or leaving me with a limp. After three surgeries performed by Prof. Sinan, I was able to return to my place in the squad in amateur football matches.

I met Mr. Sinan because of my daughter’s scoliosis surgery. We are very lucky that he came into our lives during such a difficult time. His experience in his profession and his sincere care and attention to his patient left us in admiration. I saw in Dr. Sinan what it means to truly love one’s profession. After a 14-hour surgery, my daughter regained her health thanks to Dr. Sinan and his team. I don’t even know how to thank him. I wish Dr. Sinan success in his profession and happiness in his life.

Dr. Sinan, endless thanks for everything—we are truly grateful. Thanks to the surgery you performed, my mother’s shoulder pain, which had been keeping her awake especially at night for a year, has come to an end. You diagnosed the causes of her shoulder pain as frozen shoulder, degeneration, narrowing, and a tear, and you successfully treated all of them with a single operation. No matter how much we thank you, it is not enough—we are deeply grateful. We are so glad to have you. May God grant you strength and good health and never let you be absent from our lives. Wishing you continued success, Dr. Sinan.

What is kyphosis?
Kyphosis is a condition characterized by an abnormal forward curvature of the upper part of the spine. It is commonly known as a hunchback. Kyphosis occurs in the thoracic (chest) region of the spine and is often noticeable with the shoulders rounding forward. This condition can lead to both aesthetic concerns and physical problems. Kyphosis can have multiple causes. One of the most common is postural kyphosis, which typically develops due to poor posture habits and can often be improved with corrective exercises. Another type, Scheuermann’s kyphosis, results from structural deformities in the vertebrae and is more commonly seen during adolescence. Additionally, age-related conditions such as osteoporosis, spinal fractures, and disc degeneration can also lead to kyphosis. In rare cases, congenital spinal abnormalities or neuromuscular diseases may also be among the causes of kyphosis.

Symptoms of kyphosis include back pain, fatigue, muscle tension, and aesthetic deformities caused by the curvature of the spine. In severe cases, the spinal curvature can negatively affect lung and heart function. Diagnosis is usually made through a physical examination and imaging methods such as X-rays. These methods are used to determine the degree and location of the spinal curvature. Treatment of kyphosis varies depending on the severity and underlying cause of the curvature. In mild cases, postural kyphosis is typically treated with physical therapy and exercise programs. These exercises aim to strengthen the back muscles and improve posture. In moderate cases, especially in Scheuermann’s kyphosis, the use of a brace may be recommended. Braces help support the spine and prevent the progression of the curvature.

In severe and progressive cases of kyphosis, surgical intervention may be required. The surgery is performed to restore proper spinal alignment and stabilize the spine. During this procedure, metal rods, screws, and hooks are used to correct the curvature. After surgery, patients typically undergo a period of physical therapy and rehabilitation. With early diagnosis and appropriate treatment methods, the progression of kyphosis can be controlled and patients’ quality of life can be improved. Therefore, it is important to consult a specialist when symptoms of kyphosis are noticed.
